Y'orhen "Spellsteel" Zohri Tia
Seeker of Knowledge, Keeper of Strength

"No matter where you roam, these highland peaks will forever be your home."
Told him by his mother, the son of mixed heritage bid a tearful farewell, whisked off to join his father in the land of ink and schooltomes. Despite his success in academia, he still felt a hole in his life, and an itch for adventure. When the dread star fell and his preternatural abilities came to the fore, he could sit idle no longer. Believing that he could be a force for positive change in the world, the Warrior-Mage took his learnings and set them on a course for the betterment of Eorzea.

Aside from the somewhat odd choice in attire, perhaps Y'orhen's most striking feature would be his piercing mint-green eyes, inherited in combination from his father's emerald green and mother's icy blue, with wider pupils than most Seekers, but not as round as a Keeper's eyes. Alongside this, his pronounced fangs can be seen briefly when he talks, further revealing his mixed blood. The only other features that would draw one's attention would be the large, jagged scar running down his right eye, and the Sharlayan Archon's tattoo on his left cheek, indicating his affiliation. All this surrounded by deep red hair and dusted over with a smattering of lightly-colored freckles. While his reinforced coat and armor wouldn't immediately call to mind a scholar, the lightweight-yet-protective gear is definitely befitting of a drifting battlemage. All manner of pouches and tinctures can be found hanging off the jacket within his bandolier belts, and atop his head can usually be found all manner of headwear from hats to spectacles. However, perhaps the most curious point of interest on his body would have to be the runic inscriptions tattooed onto his arms and back, inked in the same color as his Archon's mark. Unsurprisingly, Y'orhen's build also ripples with muscle beneath the protective layer of armor (and fat), crossed with numerous battle scars and covered in hair, though his musculature is more stocky than sculpted, lending an uncharacteristic sense of stoutness and strength to his otherwise scholarly poise. Y'orhen prefers to keep to himself rather than bother others, though if approached he will respond pleasantly enough. When in the presence of comfortable company, he often cracks witticisms and generally enjoys the presence of those around him, but he can also be polite and well-mannered when the situation calls for it. When not out with friends, he can usually be found holed up in his - admittedly rather messy - studio apartment in Idyllshire, poring over research notes and scholarly journals and the like. Either that, or he's out and about on a relic hunt for the Sons of Saint Coinach, or doing a job for the many adventurer's guilds across the land. He greatly enjoys cooking for company, though is rather bashful about his recipes. It's not uncommon to catch him trying to subtly watch a companion's expression for their reaction to his cooking, even if he won't outright ask for an appraisal. Despite his somewhat relaxed and friendly demeanor, however, Y'orhen will not tolerate abuse of any kind, especially towards his friends, and he's gotten into more than his fair share of scraps because of this trigger. All things considered, once you befriend this wayward Miqo'te then you've got an ironclad ally for life.
Special Abilities
Weapons Summoning | Though not the first nor only person to peform such a feat, Y'orhen takes great pride in his ability to summon weapons comprised of pure aether. Utilizing a much modified form of the Eukrasia spell, he can give shape to his aether in much the same way that other Sages summon barriers, but in the form of physical runes and Arcanima formulae. Then, utilizing the Arcane runes and sigils tattooed onto his body, Y'orhen anchors this summoned object to his own aether for permanence, much like a Carbuncle's gemstone. As such, if the weapon or tool is ever physically separated from him, it will immediately destabilize and dissipate into its constituent aether. |
Though he can summon these weapons purely through the use of his runic tattoos, doing so without the support of his nouliths to construct and stabilize their form requires immense concentration and aetheric drain, and so Y'orhen typically only resorts to using this method of summoning as a last-ditch effort.
Battlemage | While summoning weapons of pure aether would potentially classify him as a Warrior-Mage all on its own, the fact that Y'orhen combines these summoned weapons with spellwork is what really seals his status as a true battlemage. In a manner similar to how Red Mages and Thaumaturges cast spells, Y'orhen expends and aspects his own reserves of aether to infuse his particular form of soumanoutics with effects reminiscent of those used by other spellcasters. As his weapons use his own aether as an anchoring point, this makes them much easier for him to channel magical strikes and spells through, leading to a much more potent form of combat spellcraft. |
For example, since the Kardia spell reacts to the aether fired from nouliths, Ronan can make use of an alternative form of Kardia that reacts to his weapon instead, transmitting the Kardion healing to an ally - or himself - as he swings his axe, taking full advantage of the fact that his weapons are summoned primarily through the aether of his nouliths.
Echo: Weaponmaster | Though a quick learner in his own right and studious to boot, what truly enables him able to pick up new techniques so quickly is the Echo ability that was awakened within him when Dalamud fell. Nicknamed 'Weaponmaster' for its ability to help him master new weapons, this ability does exactly that. As a complete novice, Y'orhen is able to master a new fighting style within a matter of weeks, though exact time depends on a number of factors - how skilled his teacher is, how serious he is about learning, and how much he trains with the weapon or style, to name a few. As such, this ability is more of an accelerant to his natural learning process moreso than an implant of knowledge, and curiously only seems to affect him when he's learning a new weapon or fighting style, as he still learns tradeskills and magic at the same pace as he would otherwise. |
Tavern Tall Tales
Rumors from the local tavern. Best taken with an onze of salt.
"Oi, I 'eard dat froofy catboy's actually a stone cold killa. What, dat ain't enough for ya? Get dis, 'en: I seen't 'im wivout all dat getup on once, an' dat lad's built. Sure, 'e ain't winnin' none'a dem muscle-buildin' contests, but ya don't get a body like dat wivout meanin' ta use it, savvy? An' if dat don't convince ya, 'splain to me what 'e's doin' outside dem roughy type fightin' places, yeah? Man walkin' 'round those parts'a town ain't as soft as 'e looks, I'll tell ya dat much for free."
"Why are you asking me about that half-blooded bastard? You're lucky I don't have my spear with me... Hmph, if you really must know, his father's the reason our dear sister was lost to us. If he didn't steal her away with his honeyed words, she might still be with us. You'd do well to not go carelessly throwing his son's name around these parts like that, or you're liable to get skewered. That's all you're getting, now leave me to my cups..."
"Hmm, the sly redhead at the bar there? I'm not one for gossip, but he's got a preference for cute, soft-looking boys. How do I know? Well, it's easy really. I see lots of adorable little guys on that man's arms all the time, mostly other Miqo'te and Viera, but I have seen him with the occasional Hyur or Elezen every now and again. Sometimes, he's even walking out with more than one! Oh, but that isn't to say he's not fond of womenfolk either, though I wonder why he's never looked my way..."
"Blast and confound it all, that Miqo'te gets under my skin. Not only does he have the gall to profane the Sage's art for wanton warmongering, not even his employment by the Sons of Saint Coinach is worth his respect! From what I heard, he's "appropriated" - bloody well stolen, more like - an incredibly valuable Allagan artifact for his own personal use. Do you know how much we could learn from such a device? And there he is, riding around on it like it's no more than a toy to him!"
Plausible Proclamations
Stories from firsthand witnesses, though likely with a certain bias to them.
"Mister Orhen is so cool! One day, I saw him make one of those long pointy sticks with his weird floaty wand things, and start doing all kinds of cool flips and spins and stuff! My friends didn't believe me, though - they said that a nerd like him couldn't do such cool stuff, but they just haven't seen Mister Orhen! When did he start? Uhh, I dunno, but the nice old lady who lives down the street says he moved here after the Ca-la-mi-ty... Whatever that is! Mister Orhen's so nice though, he gives us all cookies and sweets every time he comes to visit!"
"Y'orhen is definitely a lot more astute than he lets on. I've done a lot of information gathering in my day, and he's got the eyes of someone who's done the same. They're keen, focused, sharp. Whoever or whatever's after him had better be five steps ahead, 'cause I doubt any less would suffice against such a perceptive fellow. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he was already planning against those that would thwart him, whoever they may be."
"'Spellsteel'..? Oh! You mean Y'orhen Tia? Don't understand why he chose a new name for himself, to be frank with you. Couldn't be that he's dissatisfied with the culture, 'cause he and his father still keep in contact with those of us on the mainland. I've only met him once or twice, though, so I can only speculate as to why he'd replace his clan title. Ah, but pardon me, I tend to ramble on if left alone, aha..."
"Oh, Y'orhen's a regular patron of the Adventurer's Guild, for sure. Dunno where he gets all the time to take jobs, considering I hear talk he's a member of the Sons of Saint Coinach, and is constantly running errands for them. Either way, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more diligent and helpful man in all of Idyllshire. Hope he takes some time for himself every once in a while though, or he'll end up in a wheelchair like his poor dad ere long."
"Y'orhen... Y'orhen... Ah! You're talking about the Warrior-Mage, aren't you? Gods, he was quite a sight to behold at the Steps of Faith. 'Course, nothing could hold a candle to the Warrior of Light being there, but he sure was trying his damndest, wasn't he? Handled his axe like a Hellsguard, he did, but from what I hear he's barely even had any formal training! I'd give my left leg to be able to master skills like that, but alas."
Wallfly Whisperings
Whispers from those closest to the man himself.
"Eh? Where'd you get your info from, the gutter? Listen, Rhen isn't the type of guy to flit between lovers like some kind of heartbreaker. Sure, he might hang out with a raunchy crowd, and hell maybe he even partakes - good for him if so! - but to my knowledge he's only ever had one significant other. Only reason he's not still with him is... Well, it's not my place to say. True, I've seen him on a date or two, but so far none of them's really stuck for any amount of time. Give it a shot if you think you've got the stuff, and I wish you the best of luck!"
"Y'orhen is quite possibly the single most dedicated scholar I've ever known. It had taken his father decades to even theorize the concept of aetheric matter construction, and he managed to not only pick it up, but also expand upon it over the course of only five years. Not even to mention how he managed to merge the somanoutic arts with those of the esoteric Arcanists quite so brilliantly. I'm not quite certain what sort of fire drives a man to work so hard at what he does, but it is truly an admirable trait of his. Of course, I would expect nothing less from one of my own students. That Archon's mark on his cheek is as much a source of pride for me as it undoubtedly is for him."
"Master Spellsteel is one of our most diligent members, and that's a fact. The Sons of Saint Coinach were founded to research Allagan relics, as you know, and never have I met a man with more passion for the subject than the day my path chanced to cross with that other red-haired Miqo'te. Why, I even had the pleasure of witnessing his efforts to rebuild that curious archive he's always carrying around. Hells, he even puzzled out the mystery of its transforming properties! It's apparently a great focus for aether, so it's no surprise he uses it as a catalyst for his magical arts - or are you to tell me that you haven't seen how his nouliths and that magic rapier he sometimes swings around are constructed from the same magitek as the archive?"
"Rhen might seem like he knows every fightin' style on this star, and with how curious he is an' how eagerly he throws himself into a fight, you'd be pretty close to the mark. That said, it seems he has a preference for certain styles an' weapons over others. Fer example, you'll mostly see him swingin' around a massive bleedin' hammer, or a pair o' twin swords. Hells, I'd even seen him win a fight with nothin' but his own Twelve-given fists. That's another thing to watch out for - he might look like a brute, but if you let him, he'll outsmart an' outmaneuver the pants off ya. Always keep yer wits about ya if you find yerself in a scuffle with that one."
"Li'l ol' Renny? Yeah, I knew his ma. Could say we were real close, like. I was the one she'd confide in when her sweetheart weren't around, and take care'a the babe when they were both busy. Well, that was 'fore the attack, anyway. One night she bursts inta my door, babblin' incoherently with tears streamin' down her face. Now, Zoh was a real tough cookie, ain't never shed a tear in the whole time I'd known her, so I figured it must've been real serious for her to come to me all distraught like that. Well, once I got a good look at Renny I knew exactly why she'd been cryin'. Poor kid had a bloody gash torn down his eye, an' once I got Zoh to calm down, she told me that her blasted mother of all folks put it there. Well, I patched up the boy as best I could, an' I think that was the last I saw of him 'fore he became a man - the family left fer Sharlayan that night."
Plot Hooks
There's plenty of open space in Y'orhen's history to accommodate old acquaintances, work partners, fellow adventurers, and so on. However, you might know him personally if one or more of the following is true for you, in order of most to least likely. If you have any ideas that aren't on this list, feel free to shoot me a tell and we can hash out details! Items marked with a yellow exclamation point (!
) are plot hooks that can be discussed with me personally beforehand to allow for a deeper connection than just what is proposed here. Items marked with a double red exclamation point (!!
) are plot hooks that will require private discussion of some kind before implementing them into a scene.
You work frequently with the various Adventurer's Guilds and Hunting Clans in Eorzea. As an adventurer - or mercenary, as one of his friends puts it - Y'orhen is always taking the odd job or two from the Guild's mission and hunt boards. Though he tends to keep to himself, he's not above asking for help or joining your adventuring party if a mission seems too daunting or dangerous to take on alone.
You're a scholar or researcher of some kind. Y'orhen travels nearly everywhere in pursuit of knowledge that could further his craft, so it's likely that he'd cross paths with other scholars to compare notes. He's especially interested in the studies of Aetherology and Allagan Technology, though any sort of scholarly pursuit would be enough to win his attention. He's a curious cat!
You were enrolled in the Studium, or otherwise lived in Old Sharlayan prior to the Calamity. Though he was born in the Sharlayan Colony in Dravania, most of Y'orhen's life was spent in Old Sharlayan with his father. Once he had completed his primary schooling, however, he entered the Studium to further his education, and was where he first developed his aetheric theorems, eventually becoming an Archon by virtue of the uniqueness of his research.
You work closely with Menphina's Arms. The orphanage in Idyllshire run by Zhloe Aliapoh has seen its fair share of gift deliveries from the red-headed battlemage, so much so that Y'orhen's become a regular sight at The Hard Place, usually with a basket of cookies and other treats in tow for the younglings.
You're a relic hunter or affiliated with the Sons of Saint Coinach, or a Sharlayan Gleaner. In addition to his personal research, Y'orhen travels the world in search of ancient artifacts on behalf of the Sons of Saint Coinach, to be collected and catalogued for all to study. Due to the nature of this field, Y'orhen would very likely run into others embarking upon similar tasks - perhaps a joint ruins dive is in the cards?
!
You live in or frequent the Dravanian Hinterlands and Idyllshire. Y'orhen makes this colony his home, living in a cozy studio apartment, and can often be found training with the sparring dummies or sharpening his skills on the local nuisances.!
You were part of the allied defense at the Steps of Faith in Ishgard. Seeing as Ishgard is his neighboring city, and something of a second home to him, he was present alongside the Warrior of Light and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn in defending Ishgard from the Dravanian incursion, and he holds a deep respect for those who were there fighting alongside him.!
You have a vested interest in somanoutics or aetheric manipulation. While summoning tools of pure aether isn't a trick unique to Y'orhen or his father Y'vharn, his particular method of doing so is definitely not commonplace - as such, those with an interest in such things or are even practitioners themselves would probably want to talk with him, and he with them. At the very least, one might know his or his father's names as prominent researchers of the subject.!!
You're part of his mother's Keeper family or his father's Seeker tribe. The matriarch of Zohri Eyjhann's Keeper clan unit harbors an intense grudge against both Y'orhen and his father, for "stealing Zohri away" from them. It stands to reason that any who wouldn't want to risk the matriarch's ire would have similar thoughts, though it's also possible that there are those in the family who don't share this disdain, either secretly or by leaving the clan unit themselves. As for Y'vharn, he hails from a sub-clan of the Dravanian Jaguar tribe that broke off and joined the Sharlayan colony in the area. They were much more accepting of his relationship with Zohri, though the Nuhn would likely be a bit miffed that he mated without the tribe's blessing first. There's likely plenty of other Sharlayan Y-tribe Miqo'te, but there's probably also just as many who stayed behind in the Forelands to live with the tribe.!!
You knew or were related to Finndren Quilltip. A fellow Sharlayan student, Finndren - affectionately referred to as "Finni" by Y'orhen and other friends - was a rather sociable, if easily-flustered Viera. Credited as the one to truly break Y'orhen out of his shell, Finni would soon become enamored with the Miqo'te, who would ultimately return his affections. The two became lovers, but the relationship was unfortunately not to last. A chance trip through the South Shroud where the outlawed remnants of his mother's Keeper clan roamed resulted in a bloodbath, and Finndren's death. Y'orhen never told anyone about what happened, both out of guilt and shame for being unable to save the love of his life, and out of fear of judgment from those who were also close to him. Perhaps your character also knew Finndren in life, and would be equipped to help console the still-grieving Y'orhen - or perhaps you blame him, too. He wouldn't say you were wrong.
Alternate Ideas
Alternative lines of canon to explore at one's behest! I'm multi-ship and multi-universe friendly, so feel free to suggest an AU or alternate storyline to follow! That said, here's a couple that I've already established for him:
Multi-Ship - If romantic writing is what you're after, don't be afraid to ask! While I don't have an "in-game" ship, I don't mind writing branching AUs to explore other ship concepts, even those with some altered backstory in mind. From Childhood Friends, to And They Were Roommates, and even Dark Timeline / Corruption AUs, nothing is off the table in the pursuit of love and other, more primal instincts.
Warrior of Light - What it says on the tin. Rather than just gaining the Echo, Y'orhen was chosen as Hydaelyn's champion and as such experienced the events of Final Fantasy XIV as played in the story... Give or take a few personal changes. In this universe, Y'orhen would come to become much more hardened and determined, a lot less laid-back. His weapons and eyes would take on a Light-aspected glow post-Shadowbringers, and due to Everything Always Happening™, he would be a much more worn-down and ragged man. While overall less goofy than he would normally be, Y'orhen makes up for it with a greater sense of companionship and loyalty through his friendships.
Healer - Instead of constantly training his body and striving for peak physical prowess, Y'orhen instead devotes his studies to the pursuit of his brand of somanoutics after his previous lover is killed - thinking that if he had just been a better healer, he could have saved them. Orhen in this AU would likely be more reserved and quiet, but would still be friendly and warm. Rather than becoming a full Sharlayan Sage, he instead becomes something akin to a hybrid of Sage and Scholar, using both somanoutics and arcanima in tandem for a unique sort of healing style that incorporates his method of solid aether summoning. Would own his own clinic in Idyllshire, but would travel to make housecalls for those who don't have the ability or gil to visit him directly.
Tribal - Rather than leaving with his father, he ends up staying behind with his mother and her family, taking the name Zohri'a Eyjhann. Despite his presence being tolerated by the matriarch and the other traditionalist Miqo'te of the clan, he would still grow up under intense scrutiny and disdain. He would likely become a lot more passive and reserved, as well, only compounded by the fact that he would show a supreme talent for Conjury and eventually White Magic. However, as only females of the clan are allowed to practice "Menphina's Gift", he would have to hide his ability, training in secret with his mother's guidance.
Master Culinarian - Rather than pursuing life as an adventurer and fortune hunter, Y'orhen instead decides to pursue his passion for cooking stirred from his part-time work at the Last Stand. Seeking to master recipes the world over, he would eventually open his own cafe in Idyllshire, donating both food and proceeds to Menphina's Arms, the orphanage started by Zhloe Aliapoh. A simpler and more slice-of-life oriented AU that focuses more on the day-to-day dealings than grand sweeping narratives.
Academy - A more "modern fantasy" take on the universe, wherein he is either a student or a teacher at the Sharlayan Studium, either can be discussed! Either way, he'll also have a home in Journey's End and frequently visit the Last Stand in his free time.

Other Oddities to Consider
Hello, I'm Victor! I tend to keep to myself, but on the rare occasion that I do put myself out into the public RP scene, I'm pretty open to meeting new people, so don't hesitate to hit me up if you see me idling around somewhere. If I don't respond immediately, that probably just means I'm tabbed out or otherwise distracted, so make sure to send me a tell if you're interested.
I'm 30+ and cool with most RP. Long-term, short-term, it's all alright. I don't shy away from mature and darker themes, but highly prefer if they had plot to go with them. Erotic and Dark RP are fine, but I would like it more if there were a build-up to it. Talk to me first before attempting to approach for that sort of thing. I don't judge, but please respect my preferences and boundaries if and when I decline an RP.
I will try to mirror post length, but my usual posts are about a paragraph or two, maybe more if the muses are especially generous to me.
I am a slow poster. I tend to overthink what I want my characters to say or how I want them to react before posting, and I can get really anxious about posting, especially with a new group. As such, a little patience goes a long way, and I will tend to either dip out or go passive if I feel like I can't keep up with a scene.
I'm open to RPing in-game or over Discord. I tend to favor Discord, but I'm active in both, so feel free to contact me through either means. My Discord tag is available by request, that way I know not to immediately ignore the message, haha.
I have no patience for OOC drama and bullshit, so kindly leave me out of it. If you take an issue with me or something I or my character has done, be direct about it so we can reach an accord, or otherwise decide whether or not it's in our best interests to continue RPing together.
Shipping with my character is not an in to a romantic relationship with me as a person. This shouldn't have to be said, but I know there's some folks out there that need to be told this. If we RP together and end up forming a friendship that eventually turns into a relationship, then that's completely fine! But don't expect to translate our characters' relationship level into our OOC one.
My activity is somewhat volatile due to fluctuating energy levels, and the hours I'm active one day may not be so for the next. However, thanks to the steady schedule of my job, I'm most available from Sunday through Tuesday, and occasionally on other days in the morning (US Pacific Time). Even so, I humbly request that you don't hold it against me if I'm not available at these times.
